Notes on the diplomas awarded by French Conservatories
The “Certificat d'études musicales” aka. CEM (Music Studies certificate) is typically awarded if the final exam is passed, after 3 “cycles” of 4 years each.
The “Diplôme d'études musicales” aka. DEM (Music Studies diploma) is typically awarded if the final exam is passed, at the end of a “specialized cycle” of 2 or more years.
Music teachers who are members of a jury for an exam do not deliver the diploma themselves. They instead award honors (ranging from none to “Very favorable”)
A “UV” or “Unité de Valeur” is an exam that must be passed successfully in order to be awarded a bigger diploma, typically the “Diplôme d'études musicales” aka. DEM.
Each “cycle” of 4 years ends with a final exam. The Second Cycle exam therefore corresponds to 8 years of practice.
